Host an International Student

Have an appropriate room available in your home? Learn how the P.B Universe host network works and what hosting a student in Manitoba involves.

Hosting, With a Local Team Behind You

International students arriving in Manitoba need somewhere safe and welcoming to live. If you have a suitable spare room, hosting is a way to put it to good use with a local company handling the coordination.

We review every host home, agree the arrangement in writing, and stay available as a point of contact for the whole placement. Compensation is discussed individually — we do not advertise fixed rates or guarantee income.

  • A clear, written arrangement before any student arrives
  • A local point of contact throughout the placement
  • Room-only or meals-included arrangements, agreed with you
  • Placement length agreed in advance
  • No obligation to accept a placement you are not comfortable with

What We Look For in a Host Home

These are the things we review when considering a home for the host network. Anything specific to a particular placement is confirmed with you directly before a student is matched.

  • A private bedroom for the student, furnished or unfurnished, agreed in advance.
  • A clean, safe, well-maintained home in Winnipeg or a surrounding Manitoba community.
  • Reasonable transit or travel access to schools and services, or a workable alternative you can describe.
  • Agreed access to shared spaces such as kitchen, bathroom and laundry, set out clearly from the start.
  • A welcoming household willing to help a student settle into a new country.
  • Willingness to complete our review process, including confirming details about your home and household and providing any references or checks required for a specific placement.
Hosting requirements can differ depending on the student, the programme and the school involved. We confirm exactly what applies to your situation before any placement is arranged — nothing is assumed from the application alone.

Questions From Homeowners & Host Families

Answers for people considering hosting a student in their home.

A host family is a household in Manitoba that provides accommodation to a student in their home, usually a private room with agreed access to shared spaces. The exact arrangement, including whether meals are included, is agreed in writing before a student is placed.

A private, furnished or unfurnished bedroom in a clean, safe and well-maintained home, with reasonable access to transit or the student's school. We confirm the specifics with you during the review process.

Compensation depends on the room, what is included in the arrangement and the length of stay, so we discuss it individually and set it out in writing. We do not advertise a fixed rate and we do not guarantee any level of income or continuous placement.

Not necessarily. Some arrangements include meals and some are room-only. We agree the arrangement with you in advance so both you and the student know what is expected.

We review each application and follow up with you to confirm the details of your home and household. Where checks or references are required for a particular placement, we tell you exactly what is needed before anything is arranged.

It varies with the student's programme and can range from a short term to a full academic year. Expected duration is agreed before a placement begins.

You have a local point of contact at P.B Universe for questions or issues during the placement, and we help work through anything that comes up between you and the student.

No. Hosting is an accommodation arrangement. You are providing a room and an agreed level of household access — not guardianship, tuition support or immigration assistance.

Complete the Host Application. It is a preliminary application — we review it and contact you to discuss your home and the arrangement before anything is confirmed.
